Makeup Removal Tips

A foundation should make your skin look as smooth and clear as possible while also helping to even out tones. Choosing the correct formula and color tone will help provide a perfect base for the rest of your makeup application.

Foundation Types and Coverage Guide - Our foundations come in many different formulas for skin typing as well as a full range of undertones. Choice of formula will be dependent on what type of coverage you are looking to achieve. Our foundations are our best sellers.

Using Powder Foundations - Loose powder foundations give a smooth, matte finish that prevents skin from looking shiny and oily. Our loose powder foundations apply best with large soft bristled brush like our Luscious Kabuki brush, a dry flocked sponge or a cosmetics puff. The use of a swirly bowl is optional, but lends a convenience that passes up a jar lid any day. The finished effect of this technique should be a barely there matte coverage that creates a natural effect and prevents the skin from looking shiny.
  • Start with freshly cleansed and nourished skin. Be sure to wait at least five minutes for your moisturizer to absorb completely into the skin.
  • If using a swirly bowl, shake a very small amount of foundation into the bowl and tap your applicator into the foundation. Be careful not to apply too much foundation at one time. It is always best to start out light and build from there.
  • Using gentle, even strokes cover the larger areas of your face first (the cheeks, forehead and t-zone), following their natural contours.
  • Blend well under the jaw line and down onto the neck to create natural effect and avoid a demarcation line.
    • Dry Skin Tip - If you find that using a loose powder foundation is too drying, try spraying the face with one of our Specialty Mineral Makeup Setting Sprays or any of our Toner, Tonics or Botanical Sprays after application and gently tap moisturized foundation onto face with a soft cosmetic puff or flocked sponge until desired affects are achieved. Also works wonderful with a Luscious Kabuki brush for an airbrushed flawless finish.

Using Liquid Foundations - Liquid or creamy type foundations produces a more lightweight finish than the loose powder variety and tends to be easier to use on dry skin. However, some people find it harder to apply. The trick is not to overload the sponge, which creates a streaky, unnatural effect that will be difficult to correct. To finish, always brush over your foundation base with a Finalizer or Finisher. The loose powder Finalizers and Finishers help the foundation stay in place longer. The finished effect should be smooth and even.
  • Start with freshly cleansed and nourished skin. Be sure to wait at least five minutes for your moisturizer to absorb completely into the skin.
  • Apply a little foundation onto a flocked sponge or cosmetics wedge. Using gentle, even strokes cover the larger areas of your face first (the cheeks, forehead and t-zone), following their natural contours.
  • Blend well under the jaw line and down onto the neck to create natural effect, as well as around the hairline.
  • Check for unevenness around the eyes and the side of nose. Lightly pat with the sponge any areas that need a little more foundation, but do not cover the whole face again - that would give a thick unnatural effect.
  • Once satisfied with coverage, brush on a Finisher or Finalizer, again following the contours of the face. For a more matte finish, apply the Finisher or Finalizer using a soft cosmetics puff and then brush over.

Shading and Highlighting - Whatever shape your face, skillful shading and highlighting can help to enhance your good points and minimize the less desirable ones. Using a foundation shade a step lighter than your normal foundation for highlighting makes the features highlighted more prominent, while using a foundation shade a step or two darker than your normal shade for shading helps those undesirable areas recede into the back ground. You should highlight your good points, such as high cheek bones, but shadow plump cheeks or a heavy jaw line. To figure out what you would like to highlight or shade on your face, you'll need to pull the hair back away from your face with a head band or scarf. In front of a mirror, start by examining your face from the front and in profile. Touch the brow bones, eye sockets, nose bone, cheekbones and chin with your fingertips to understand how they are structured. Once decided, you can begin. This technique is a BEFORE normal foundation application. The finished effect should be a soft, subtle foundation application with good features highlighted and emphasized and less desirable ones shaded and minimized.
  • To Shade - Apply the darker than normal foundation shade to the areas where you want to emphasize the shadows, such as a heavy jaw line.
    • A heavy or square jaw line should be shaded to create more oval shape.
    • Rounded cheeks should be shaded to create shadows, causing the area to recede

  • To Highlight - Apply the lighter than normal foundation shade to the areas that you wish to highlight, such as the cheekbones.
    • Cheekbones should be highlighted to make them seem more prominent.
    • Highlighting the tops of the cheekbones will lift the whole cheek area, same for the eyes with highlighting the brow bone.

  • To Finish - Apply your base foundation to the whole face and neck, blending into the border lines of the light and dark shades. Check that the makeup looks natural and balanced. Go back over the light and shadow areas again if necessary.

Correcting Facial Shapes
  • Long Face Shapes - To reduce the length of a long face, use a darker shade foundation to shade around the top of the forehead, blending into the hairline. Shade along the jaw line, too, and under the cheekbones. Dot a lighter shade foundation just above the cheekbones to highlight, then apply your base foundation, blending well. Reapply the lighter and darker shades if necessary. Brush blusher along the cheekbones but not too far down the face.

  • Square Face Shapes - Soften a square face by using a darker foundation to shade an almost triangular shape on either side of the jaw. Shade the sides of the forehead, too, to help reduce the width of the top part of the face. Dot a lighter shade foundation above the cheekbones to highlight, then apply your base foundation, blending well. Reapply the lighter and darker shades if necessary. Brush blusher along the cheekbones.

  • Round Face Shapes - To reduce the width of a round face, use a darker foundation shade underneath the cheekbone to give the face more angles. Blend into the hairline. Dot a lighter foundation above the cheekbones to highlight and on the tip of the chin to counteract the moon shape. Apply your base foundation, blending well. Reapply the lighter and darker shades if necessary. Brush blusher along the cheekbones.

  • Heart Face Shapes - To even up a heart-shaped face, use a darker shade of foundation on the sides of the forehead to help reduce the width of the face, and also on the tip of the chin to make it look less pointed. Dot a lighter shade foundation just above the cheekbones to highlight, then apply your base foundation, blending well. Reapply the lighter and darker shades if necessary. Brush blusher along the cheekbones blending it up onto the temples.
